Dental Implants

dental implants

Dental Implants are an innovation to replace a missing tooth or a number of teeth. An implant consists of a titanium artificial “root” which is placed directly into the jaw bone to act as a replacement root. The implant is made using pure titanium which allows new bone to grow around it. This process is called ‘osseointegration’ and while it started in dentistry, and it was so successful, it is now used in orthopaedics.

Our teeth implants in New Zealand can be used to replace -
  • One tooth – One implant will be placed, a crown will then be fixed on top of the implant.
  • Several teeth – Either several implants and crowns will be placed or a dental bridge will be fitted onto the implants.
  • All the teeth – A number of implants are placed, then either a fixed bridge will be fitted onto the implants or the implants will be used to firmly hold a removable denture.

Mini implants

An exciting new variation of new implants are mini implants. As the name suggests, they are much smaller than standard implants and are used in the following two situations.

Denture stability

Mini implants are an excellent way of stopping your denture from floating around and being unstable. Put simply, a mini implant acts like the male part of a dome and the female part is built into the denture thereby allowing the denture to “clip” into place. Because it is rigidly fixed, the denture can not move side to side or up and down, hence gives excellent stability. These implants are small and are used in multiples so as to spread the grip throughout your mouth. Careful assessment is required to assess the suitability of your particular problems. Poor quality bone and smoking for example are negative factors which will compromise the result but yet can be still used under certain circumstances, with a realistic and reasonable expectation.

Such treatment needs to be carefully looked at to examine the clinical (dental) problems and treatment, the financial significance but most important of all, is the significance of such treatment to the individual person. We go a very long way to explain in detail all the above issues and you need to be very clear in your understanding before starting anything.

Transitional implants

These mini implants are used less often but if you have an immediate need for stability they can be used prior to regular implants for a more definitive result. It is a quick fix to get you out of a problem fast!

As always, pre-planning is imperative and a full understanding of all factors and implications is vital. It’s good to get a quick fix but the “big picture” is important before we start.
