Dental Fillings

Fillings are the most common type of ‘restorative treatment’. A filling replaces the part of the tooth that has been lost because decay has caused a cavity in the tooth or because the tooth has broken.

Because of different factors working on your teeth, fillings vary greatly (indeed, from individual to individual) and material choice is critically important to meet the requirements of:
• Strength.
• Long-term durability.
• Aesthetics.

Obviously, the front of your mouth has to be “pretty” where fortunately the bite forces are the lightest. The opposite applies to the rear of the mouth. High crushing forces have to be met and strength is the primary consideration. And at tooth level, we will evaluate your tooth to see what is best for a particular tooth and discuss this with you.

The “right material”

The front of the mouth has only one choice – pretty! (See “Composites”). The further the filling is to the rear of your mouth, then it will need much more strength.

Composite

Composite is a “white filling”. Composite works best in small fillings, especially in the front teeth. Whilst it is not very strong, in favourable circumstances, it can be used further back in the mouth.

It is a tooth coloured mix of glass particles suspended in a resin mix and is available in several shades to perfectly match your teeth. It is bonded directly to your teeth which provides a little extra support to the remaining tooth structure.
Composites can be used for a variety of cosmetic dental procedures, including –
• Repair for decay.
• Repairing chipped or broken teeth.
• Closing gaps between your teeth (diastemas).
• Reshaping your teeth.

As the bite forces increase markedly in the rear of the mouth, composite struggles badly and there are better materials for the “white look” with ceramic inlays/onlays and crowns. We will advise you what will work best for you as risky treatment is expensive to fix and at the start, a good choice is imperative!

Amalgam

Amalgam has been well tested both scientifically and over a long time. It is still used because it is so good and as a filling material it is simple, comparatively cheap, strong and has a great service life, only bettered by gold!

Amalgam is proven to:
• Be the strongest filling material.
• Last up to 4 times longer than composite.
• Dramatically reduce the re-treatment/replacement problem.
• Be the best material for people with “hard bites”, frequent fractures and clenching and grinding.
• Work well in total tooth rebuilds.
• Be safe. It has been used for over 100 years and mainstream scientific studies show no health risks.
